"It's good to be that way," David replied instinctively.
Janet got up and went to her bookshelf. She pulled down a psychology book and opened it. She flipped the pages casually at first. Then she began to turn them more quickly. Soon she was frantic.
"For Christ's sake," David cried, "what are you looking for?"
"I'm looking for the definition of shadow." A page tore as she ripped through the pages. "Where is it? It's not here!"
"Of course not. Try the dictionary."
"But I've seen it here before. I've seen it!" Janet threw down the book.
David stood up and walked over to her. Janet sobbed uncontrollably. He contemplated putting his arm around her. He felt he should comfort her. But he was afraid if he did so, he would laugh aloud. He could not help smiling as it was. He lowered the lights in the living room. The shadows surrounded them.
