A Federal Reserve Note

poetry

The mystery of some things arises
from the fact they function so effectively.
Blinded by repeated experience, we miss
the historical implication and feel
neither the pleasure or convenience
of that which, once, no one took for granted.
So much might be said of the Reserve Note.
For try to conduct all your transactions
in shinplasters or stones, silver or gold;
barter like simple men; exchange on faith;
and factor exponentially the time
you have just waited in line at the bank;
and see how soon you come to appreciate
 the happy circumstance of the Reserve.
